Description of Artwork: The student's short story featured the account of a young serial killer. It included descriptions of sexual torture, dismemberment and bloodlust.



Description of Incident: The freshman student's teacher, Jan Richman, brought the controversial story to the writing department administrator, Tom Molanphy, who advised her to discuss the use of violence and "grisly" details in literature and "deal with it however you feel comfortable." When the president and vice-president of the university learned of the story, they contacted the San Francisco Police Department's homocide division. However, no charges could be brought upon the student.



Results of Incident: When Richman, an adjunct professor, inquired about her job status for the Winter 2004 semester, she learned that her position was terminated. No reason for dismissal was given. The university expelled the student and sent him home.

Description of Incident: An Egyptian newspaper reporter, Salah Montasser, attacked the book in "al-Ahram," suggesting that it "denigrated the Islamic faith" and requested that it be removed from the school's curriculum



Results of Incident: The American University in Cairo went beyond the Higher Education Ministry and the columnist's requests and removed the book from both the course and the library shelves.

Description of Artwork: Van Biljon admitted to "Finesse," a magazine for Christian women, that she did not believe in the Christian religion.



Description of Incident: Van Biljon is a well-known Afrikaner writer. She won an award from the Afrikaans Language and Culture Association(ATKV)for her work. The ATKV was the cultural arm of the Afrikaner Broederbond, a political mafia behind the National Party government responsible for the aparteid. The award was taken away from Van Biljon on the grounds that it was "only for Christians."



Results of Incident: The ATKV detracted Van Biljon's prize

Description of Artwork: Kirkpatrick wrote an e-mail to his classmates admitting that he liked rock music. He named several bands that he favors, such as "Rage Against the Machine" and "Korn." There was no profanity or violence contained in the e-mail.



Description of Incident: Kirkpatrick admitted to listening to rock music in school and in an e-mail to friends. The principal, Mary Thompson, told Neil's parents, Sherry and Dan Kirkpatrick, that their son was "a moral and spiritual detriment," to the student body at St. Pius X. She also asked the Kirkpatricks, "what kind of parents would allow their child to listen to that kind of music?"



Results of Incident: The school expelled Neil without informing or interviewing Neil or his parents.

Name: Clear Channel cancels Howard Stern show   [ Edit ]

Description of Artwork: Howard Stern's radio program is known for it's lewd sexual, racial and political remarks. Recently, Stern interviewed Rick Saloman, a man who videotaped himself having sex with famed Hilton Hotel heiress Paris Hilton. During the nationally syndicated broadcast, Stern made references to anal sex and to the size of the man's penis. A caller to the show made a racist comment over the air.



Description of Incident: Clear Channel Communications INC. cancelled Stern's show citing the interview with Rick Salomon as a violation of the communications company's "zero tolerance" policy. Clear Channel CEO, John Hogan said that Stern's show "was vulgar, offensive, and insulting, not just to women and African Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency."



Results of Incident: Clear Channel suspended Stern's program from six of its carrier's nationwide. Hogan said that the show would not air until it adheres to acceptable broadcasting standards.

Description of Incident: Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad complained of Hussain's paintings. The government, dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party, gave permission to Delhi police to investigate Hussain. Their charge was insulting the Hindu religion.



Results of Incident: Hussain has had his home in Bombay attacked by Hindu militants because of his work.

Description of Artwork: The film, "Sarah Balabagan Story," is about a Filipina maid who escaped execution for murder in United Arab Emirates in 1994.



Description of Incident: Officials from the UAE expressed concern for Emirates-Philippino relations and for the safety of the 80,000 Philippinos living in the country if the film is shown. In addition, Muslim groups petitioned the Philippino government to cancel the film's screening. They claimed it was "a disgrace to the high morality of Muslim women."



Results of Incident: The Philippino president, Ramos, deferred the films release.

Description of Artwork: "Salo," also known as "120 Days of Sodom," is a film about religious and government officials who indulge in vivid baccanalian rituals, such as sundry sexual fetishes and genital mutilation, with their constituencies following the allied invasion of fascist Italy during World War II.



Description of Incident: The film has been banned in New Zealand since its release in 1975. Their have been attempts to show the film in 1976 and 1993, but they have been denied by the Office of Film and Literature Classification.



Results of Incident: New Zealand customs officers siezed the film while it was destined to show at the International Film Festival at the Paramount Theater in Wellington.

Description of Artwork: Arenfeld spit on a cross that was part of a religious procession outside of Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre in March 1995.



Description of Incident: In the original trial, a judge concluded that a religious disturbance had occured even though there was no act that tried to prevent the procession. The judge suggested that "freedom of expression has its limits."



Results of Incident: The appeals court upheld this ruling and enforced a two month sentence and $240.00 fine.

Description of Incident: Sastrosatomo was the leader of the Indonesian Socialist Party. The government banned his book and suggested that it could precipitate civil unrest and tarnish the government's image.



Results of Incident: Officials banned the book and questioned a well known government critic, Ali Sadikin, in connection with trying to reprint the book.

Description of Artwork: The film, "Ararat," depicts a massacre that took place in 1915, when Turkish nationalists violently drove Armenians from the Anatolia region of Turkey. The events of these massacres have been a taboo subject in Turkish discourse.



Description of Incident: "Ararat" is scheduled to premier in Turkish theaters, however, it is feared that the dramatic telling of these events will provoke hostility among Turkish nationalists who do not want to acknowledge Turkish crimes against humanity. The National Action Party has declared that they would take violent action against any theater that shows the film.



Results of Incident: The film's distributor has postponed the screening of the film in response to the threat of violence. Turkey's Minister of Culture and Tourism has exalted the government's approval of the film as a great step toward democracy and free speech in the country, but fears it will precipitate nationalist hostility.

Description of Artwork: The photograph, "Snow White and the Madness of Truth," contains a photo of a Palestinian suicide bomber, notorious for an attack on a restaurant that killed 21 Israelis, on a sailboat floating in a sea of red liquid. The photo was part of an exhibit called "Making Differences;" its purpose is to raise awareness of an upcoming anti-genocide conference hosted by Sweden.



Description of Incident: When ambassador Zvi Mazel saw the photo in Stockholm's Museum of Antiquities, he disconnected a spotlight and threw it at the image. Mazel has suggested that he "couldn't have reacted in any other way," and that the piece was "a call for genocide."



Results of Incident: Mazel was asked to leave the museum. Since the incident, the directors of the museum have been bombarded with offensive and threatening e-mail; many artists and Swedish officials have denounced the ambassador's actions as contrary to free expression; and Mazel has confirmed that the Israeli embassy will leave Stockholm.

Description of Artwork: Sports Illustrated's annual swimsuit issue features women in bathing suits in various poses and locations around the world.



Description of Incident: A sixth-grade student, Justin Reyes, had the magazine in his school gymnasium before classes started. The Principal, Kathy Garrison, reprimanded Reyes for "non-verbal harassment and possession of lewd or suggestive material." Superintendent, Tim Swarr, suggested that the swimsuit issue "doesn't belong in public schools."



Results of Incident: Reyes was ordered to spend two days at an alternative school where students from other local districts are sent when they are punished. Justin's mother, Nicole Reyes, opted for a three-day at home suspension, suggesting that the two-day alternative school sentence was too harsh.
